CNC milling a pocketed enclosure: walls, bores and datums

A pocketed part needs enough material around its recesses to support cutting and retain the mounting features. Wall thickness, cutter access and mating interfaces determine the machining approach.

Pocket geometry and mounting interfaces

Cavity depth, wall thickness, corner radii and mounting datums belong in the same model. Cutter access and protected clamping surfaces determine the proposed route.

  1. Review the stock and access

We check the model for tool reach, internal geometry and corner radii, including any permitted radius changes. Pocket depth, minimum walls and available clamping faces determine access and support.

  2. Machine the recess and interfaces

Shared datums relate the pockets, bores and mounting features. The setup needs room for tools and clamps, with support for minimum walls and protection for specified areas.

  3. Confirm final dimensions

Mounting datums locate the holes and bores for depth, wall-thickness, position and mating-surface checks. Seal lands, cosmetic faces and dimensions after finishing have their own acceptance requirements.

Checking the cavity, interfaces and final finish

Datum faces locate the mounting holes and pocket depths. We agree how to measure and record critical dimensions, including requirements on any sealing or mating surfaces.

Review areaDrawing and acceptance requirements
Cavities and walls

Specify pocket depth, corner radius, wall thickness and machining allowance. Agree depth and remaining-wall checks from the drawing.

Bores and mounting faces

Define datum faces, hole positions and mating interfaces, with position, flatness and sealing-face acceptance.

After finishing

Define treatment and protected dimensions, with final-dimensional and cosmetic acceptance.

For your part, we agree the measurement method, condition after finishing, support, sampling and report format before production.
