Machining from an Existing Sample
We can start from an existing part and work toward a drawing for manufacture. First we review its fit, material and any wear or hidden features; you approve the resulting specification before machining.

What we need for the first review
Send photographs, overall dimensions, mating-part details and any existing drawings for the first review. We identify the measurements needed to define wear, hidden features and fitted geometry, including whether a physical sample is required.

- Retain
- Overall dimensions, working faces, mating parts, bores, threads and sealing surfaces to retain.
- Resolve
- Separate wear and damage from the intended geometry. Establish hidden features, material and treatment, then record the requested design changes.
- Approve
- The intended fit, material, finish, model and drawing revision, and acceptance requirements for the new part.
What each stage delivers
We review the sample, prepare the manufacturing definition and machine the part in separate stages. The quotation covers measurement and modeling work, file formats and who approves each stage.

| Stage | Input | Output | Approval responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sample review | Photographs, overall dimensions, mating parts and available drawings; identify wear, damage and intended changes. | A list of retained features, unknowns and measurements needed. Photographs support the initial review. | Settle the review and measurement scope before reconstruction. |
| Geometry measurement and reconstruction | The sample and measurements or scanning needed for accessible and hidden geometry, including datum relationships. | The agreed model and 2D / 3D drawings, with tolerances, material, finish and mating-fit requirements. | Agree how inaccessible geometry and datum relationships will be established, which files and formats the quotation includes, and who may approve them. |
| Approved manufacturing definition | Reviewed geometry, material, condition, finish, tolerances and acceptance requirements. | The released model / drawing revision and a first-part acceptance plan. | Approve the definition before machining; hold repeat production until the agreed first-part review is complete. |
Replacement material and finish
Record the known specification, resolve unknowns and approve the replacement requirements before machining.
| Material / scope | Specification | Finish / treatment | Confirm for this drawing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Known material | Provide the existing specification, grade and condition if available. | Record the known finish and any changes required. | Confirm the specification on the approved drawing. |
| Unknown material | Mark unknown grades or treatments explicitly. | Specify the treatment or provide the material and finishing records needed to identify it. | Agree how material and finish requirements will be established. |
| Replacement requirements | Specify the intended application and mating components. | Define cosmetic and working surfaces separately. | Approve substitutions and acceptance requirements before machining. |
Approve the first part before repeat production
Review the measured part and its agreed records against the approved specification.

| Feature | Specify on the drawing | Agree before production |
|---|---|---|
| First-part review | Quantity, fit or functional checks, records and acceptance limits. | Measurement or functional-test method, limits, records and authorized first-part approver, settled before repeat production is released. |
