CNC turning followed by milling for cylindrical parts

After turning, a component may need milling for flats, slots or holes away from the axis. The turned axis and locating face provide references for that work.

The turned references for milling

Off-axis holes, slots and flats are located from the turned datum axis and a shoulder or face.

turned and milled component forms
  1. Establish the turned geometry

The drawing defines working diameters, the bore, shoulders and axial dimensions. Where assembly depends on them, the datum axis sets radial relationships and a shoulder or face sets axial location.

  2. Locate for the milling operation

We locate the milling setup from the turned features while leaving the off-axis geometry accessible. An angular datum fixes the orientation of holes, slots and flats around the axis.

  3. Inspect the combined relationships

The inspection plan sets diameter, runout and position checks and where to measure them. The drawing defines edge and final-surface acceptance at burr-sensitive intersections, threads and sealing or sliding surfaces.

Check the axis, off-axis features and final surfaces

The drawing identifies the datum axis, critical diameters, hole or slot positions and any runout limit. We agree which results to report for approval.

Turned body

Define the datum axis, mating diameters, shoulders and axial dimensions, with diameter and runout requirements.

Off-axis milled features

Locate holes and slots relative to the turned axis. Agree position checks using the secondary locating datums.

Edges and surfaces

Define deburring, surface finish and final acceptance state, with thread, edge and final-surface checks.

For your part, we agree the measurement method, condition after finishing, support, sampling and report format before production.
