CNC-machined casting housings
Projecting connections restrict clamping and cutter approach on a cast housing. Their angles and positions come from a controlled drawing, or from a sample-to-drawing stage agreed before machining.

Projecting connections around the main body
Housing datums locate the connection axes and end faces. Section views define internal bores or passages, with thread, fit and sealing requirements at each connection.
If there is no complete drawing, use the sample to define connection bores, mating faces and required internal interfaces before agreeing the machining scope. Splines are reviewed only where the controlled model requires them.
| Feature | Drawing requirements | Acceptance checks |
|---|---|---|
| Sample & mating parts | Provide available drawings, sample photographs, mating-part information and features to retain or change. If drawings are incomplete, define connection bores, mating faces and required internal interfaces from the sample before agreeing the machining scope. | Defined internal interfaces from the approved model. |
| Blank & datum definition | Distinguish the blank and finished models, machining allowance and datum targets. Agree the blank supplier, incoming acceptance, permitted variation, retained cast surfaces and responsibility for rejected blanks. | Blank condition, machining allowance and agreed datum targets. |
| Internal interfaces | Use sections to define internal bores and connection-to-flange relationships, with inspection access. Include splines and bore-to-face or spline dimensions only where the approved model requires them. | Bore, connection and flange relationships, with access for the agreed checks. |
| Approval & inspection | An incomplete definition requires a separate drawing-approval stage. Agree the datum scheme and approved drawing before machining mating surfaces, with casting condition and treatment. Specify bore-alignment or spline checks and first-article, in-process, final or pre-shipment inspections. | Specify required bore-alignment or spline checks and first-article, in-process, final or pre-shipment inspections. |
Holding the body while accessing the connections
Projecting connections limit where we can hold the blank and approach each end. We review the full blank envelope and machining allowance so one connection does not block access to another.
If only a sample is available, agree which dimensions will be reconstructed, who approves the resulting drawing and which hidden features need additional definition. Sample reconstruction is a separate stage before the controlled part can be manufactured.
CNC milling and boring follow the approved housing definition. Sample scanning or reverse engineering may be needed first; workholding and datum transfer are checked against that definition.
Transmission and hydraulic pump housings require defined bearing, mounting and sealing interfaces. Use the casting and finished-part drawings to control the blank and machining requirements.

Supply scope
Blank and finished models identify machining allowance and datum targets. The order sets the blank supplier, incoming acceptance, permitted variation, retained cast surfaces and responsibility for rejected blanks. Missing geometry needs a separate drawing-approval stage.
